Folder Courses

In order to assist developing countries with theinstallment of an operational taxonomic workforce, the Belgian National FocalPoint to the Global Taxonomy Initiative has set up a training program thatincorporates both theoretical and taxon-specific teaching. The presentso-called 'GTI-reader' is the basic tool used by the Belgian GTItutors to teach the general principles of contemporary theoretical taxonomy. Itincludes sections that cover a number of biological sub-disciplines that ataxonomist must understand in order to perform state of the art taxonomicresearch, but also sections that cover more pragmatic issues that taxonomistsmust master (e.g. themaking of a taxonomic publication, finding appropriate funding for a taxonomicproject, making efficient-use of web-based tools, etc.).

Our 'GTI-reader' is organised in a number ofmodules that each time hold three sections

  • background information: concise texts as to the 'What?', 'Why?' and How?' of the concerned module;
  • course: the slides used in teaching by the tutors. At present the slides are given only as non-annotated jpegs.
  • read more: a folder that contains not only the raw materials (references and websites) used for constructing the teaching presentations, but also additional materials of practical use to students  that wish to go deeper into the matter.

This reader is available both in French and in English,although slight differences between the content of the two versions may exists.

The GTI reader is also available on CD ROM and this on motivated request sent to cbd@naturalsciences.be.

The course builders wish you an interesting journey intothe world of contemporary theoretical taxonomy and collection management.
